Helping the CommunityWe understand that tourists today are more interactive than in years past. Destinations that have a greater respect for the culture and ecology of local communities, as well as those that benefit the local people are in greater demand. Soma Surf Resort was was created with as little negative impact on the environment as possible while forging a connection to the Nicaraguan people and land. Your stay at soma will not only nourish you, but also directly benefit local communities and non-profits.
First. Simply by staying at soma you are supporting and providing direct employment and training for over a dozen families in the community. This is huge. You have just provided food, shelter, school access, medicine, and all basic necessities.
Second. 4% of all proceeds from soma goes directly to Corazón Abierto a non-profit organization performing open heart surgery for children here in Nicaragua who are in desperate need of this life saving operation. Can you imagine you have just helped save the life of a child by simply booking a room and vacationing at soma?
Third. 1% of all proceeds from soma goes directly to Aprender Nicaragua, a local non-profit with a focus on education. Aprender helps enroll kids in school, provides school supplies and uniforms, tutoring, counseling, and works closely with parents and teachers. Aprender also founded and runs the local library which runs various educational programs. Your stay at Soma helps improve education for children in our area.
Soma’s Role in Active SustainabilitySoma is committed to this all important area while meeting the expectations of our guests.

Each bungalow is finely appointed with furniture and art from local artisans. If you would like to purchase any items, soma would be more than happy to arrange for the shipping to your home. A portion of proceeds from purchases of these products goes directly back to the community.
Soma was built with respect for the local environment. All of Soma's buildings are built using locally made, sun-dried bricks. The stone and wood used is native to Nicaragua and found locally. The workers employed in construction live in the surrounding villages.

The Finger Wag: Limber up your wrists and fingers if you want to communicate like a true native.. Probably the single most practical gesture is the rapid side to side waggging of the index finger. It means no, and in some cases a verbal no in the absence of the "finger wag" is disregarded as not serious.
Nicaraguan Wrist Snap: To pull off the "Nicaraguan Wrist Snap" simply join the tips of your thumb and middle finger together and let your index finger dangle loosely. Then with a series of rapid wrist flicks repeatedly let your index finger slap against the middle one. The snapping noise emphasizes what you are saying.
